The Akita is a large, double-coated dog from northern Japan originally used in hunting wild boars and bears. Our dog, “Botchan” (young master) was inspired by the famous Akita, Hachiko.

Hachiko’s owner was a Tokyo Imperial University professor who died in 1925 of an aneurysm at work. Hachiko came to Shibuya Station daily for the next ten years waiting for his master’s return, until his own death in 1935. Today, a statue at the station commemorates his faithfulness and Hachiko’s taxidermied fur is on display at the National Museum of Science and Nature in Tokyo as the example of a proper Akita.

秋田犬は、日本北部原産の大型のダブルコートの犬種で、もともとイノシシやクマ狩りに使われていました。私たちの愛犬「坊ちゃん」（若様）は、有名な秋田犬「ハチ公」にちなんで名付けられました。

ハチ公の飼い主は東京帝国大学の教授でしたが、1925年に勤務中に動脈瘤で亡くなりました。ハチ公はその後10年間、1935年に亡くなるまで、毎日渋谷駅に通い、飼い主の帰りを待ち続けました。現在、駅にはその忠誠心を称える像が建てられており、ハチ公の剥製は東京の国立科学博物館に、理想的な秋田犬の模範として展示されています。
